Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on Wednesday signed a decision to declare Covid-19 a nationwide epidemic.

Earlier on Monday the PM agreed with the proposal from the Ministry of Health to declare the Covid-19 outbreak a nationwide epidemic amid the rising cases reported in the country.

According to the announcement, since Vietnam reported the first coronavirus case on January 23, various solutions and measures to cope with the epidemic have been carried out following the Law on Infectious Diseases including setting up a steering committee for the disease, health quarantine, monitoring affected areas, mobilising resources in society to fight the epidemic, international co-operation, and setting up makeshift hospitals.

Covid-19 was defined among Group A infectious diseases according to Vietnamese disease classification, pointing to a number of significantly dangerous diseases that can spread rapidly and have high mortality rates including avian influenza virus A (H5N1), Polio and Ebola.

On Tuesday, PM Phuc issued a directive which orders social distancing measures to be applied for 15 days in an attempt to curb the virus spread.

The order which will be applied nationwide from April 1 will restrict people from leaving their homes and ban the gatherings of more than two people in public places.

Vietnam reported 212 Covid-19 cases as of the morning of April 1.
