He died at 5.29 pm on April 19 at the Hanoi-based Friendship Hospital. He had gone through three operations and radiotherapy but his incisions didn't heal well.

He was born on August 14, 1943, in Can Loc District in the central province of Ha Tinh. He graduated from Hanoi University of Industrial Fine Art-Ceramic Department in 1963. He was an intern in ceramics in China in 1968-1970 and then graduated from Vietnam University of Fine Arts in 1975. Three years later, he became a member at the Vietnam Fine Arts Association.

He had a deep knowledge of plastic arts and visual arts in painting and ceramic. He had penned many pieces of research and articles about arts as well as a series of book about Vietnam ceramics.

Some of his well-known works are Mau Xanh Tren Vung Dat Do (The Green on Red Land) - oil painting in 1980, Duong Len Dien Bien (Road to Dien Bien) -lacquer in 2005, Ngay Vui Giai Phong (Happy Day of Liberation) - plaster carving in 1986, and Nhung Canh Dieu (The Kites) -plaster carving in 1983.

He had worked as a deputy head of the decorating faculty at Hai Duong Porcelain JSC from 1963 to 1975, deputy director of the Research Centre of Hanoi University of Industrial Fine Arts from 1977 to 1984, member of the Central Council for the Theory and Criticism of Literature and Arts and member of the 11th National Assembly during 2002-2007 period.

He was the president of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association from 1999 to 2019.

He had been given many awards during his time such as the State Prize for Literature and Arts in 2007, the third-class resistance medal, Labour Medal (First Class), and medal for the Fine Arts of Vietnam, the medal for the career of Vietnamese Literature and Arts and many other awards.
