British Covid-19 pilot sees positive improvement
A British pilot with Covid-19 has seen a slight health improvement following a long treatment in Vietnam.
According to the Ministry of Health, by this morning, May 21, up to 264 out of the country’s total 324 Covid-19 cases had been discharged from hospital. Among 60 remaining patients, up to 27 are being treated at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Hanoi.
The 43-year-old British pilot or Patient 91 who is staying at the HCM City Hospital for Tropical Diseases now has stable blood pressure without any fever. His lungs which have mostly been damaged have mildly improved.
The second computerised tomography scan indicated that his lungs have improved by 20-30%.
Dr. Nguyen Van Vinh Chau, director of the HCM City Hospital for Tropical Diseases said that there is no fluid left in his left lung, while the right one has a modest amount only.
He has also tested negative to Covid-19 six consecutive times.
He, however, still fully depends on life support in the form of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
Associate Prof. Luong Ngoc Khue, head of the Administration of Medical Examination and Treatment said that he could be provided with a lung transplant when his health was ensured. The patient was moved to Cho Ray Hospital on May 21 to wait for the transplant.
Meanwhile, many Vietnamese have volunteered to donate pieces of their lung to help save him, reported the Vietnam National Coordinating Centre for Human Organ Transplantation.
