Vietnam has reported its third death connected to Covid-19 virus on Saturday morning, a 68-year-old woman with leukaemia, according to the Ministry of Health.

The woman, Patient 499, is from the central city of Danang where she was among 92 new cases recorded since last week.

Before contracting Covid-19, the woman had been affected by leukaemia, hypertension and diabetes which resulted in malignant haematologic carcinoma in its final stages and severe pneumonia.

She stayed at Danang Hospital from July 18 to 23. She then had a fever and was moved to Danang Oncology Hospital the next day where she was tested positive for Covid-19.

By late afternoon of Friday, her condition worsened and had to use a ventilator.

Experts from the Ministry of Health held a consultation on her treatment which, however, failed. She died early this morning, August 1.

Professor Nguyen Gia Binh, Former Head of Intensive Care department of Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi, said that the fatality was not totally due to Covid-19 but mainly complications related to leukaemia.

The country’s first two deaths, patients 428 and 437, related to Covid-19 announced on Friday were also caused by chronic diseases such as hypertension, kidney failure and diabetes.
