11 Covid-19 patients on verge of death

The Ministry of Health has said that 11 of the 284 active Covid-19 cases under treatment in Vietnam are at risk of death.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Health’s Treatment sub-committee under the National Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control held the seventh consultation on Covid-19 treatment.

According to the agency, by Tuesday afternoon, Vietnam had 284 active Covid-19 patients being treated at 24 medical facilities nationwide, including 24 in critical condition. Among those, 11 are on the edge of fatality, with seven using ventilators and four supported with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

Six patients at risk are staying at Hue Central Hospital in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue which saw three deaths due to the pandemic earlier. The hospital is also providing treatment for 23 cases in the most dangerous condition, including 18 moved from hospitals in Danang and five from Quang Nam Central Hospital.

Hue Central Hospital has arranged isolation facilities for patients in serious condition or those who had close contact with Covid-19 cases or those from pandemic-hit areas.

A group of 10 experts from the Ministry of Health are present at the hospital for the assistance, including Prof. Dr Nguyen Lan Hieu, director of Hanoi Medical University Hospital. Hieu gave medical checks to some patients being in grave condition.

Meanwhile, five other patients in extremely critical condition, including two using ECMO are being treated at Danang Hospital in the central city of Danang which witnessed three fatalities by the end of Tuesday.

Quang Nam Central Hospital has three cases in a challenging condition out of 26 active patients under treatment there.

At the consultation, experts gave treatment warnings for each patient in serious illness. Danang Hospital was asked to ensure safety when sending patients to other medical facilities. Quang Nam Central Hospital needs to apply the latest Covid-19 treatment regime issued by the Ministry of Health.

Vietnam confirmed eight deaths related to Covid-19 by August 4.
