Illegal border-crossers caught

The border guards found the group near the border market at Mo Phang Village in Meo Vac District, Ha Giang Province. Since a woman brought her infant along, the guards also helped to make porridge for the baby, took information from the group and brought them to quarantine centre.

Captain Nguyen Van Chung, deputy head of Xin Cai Border Station, said most of the border-crossers are from the southern provinces of Vietnam. They illegally crossed the border to China to find works in early 2020. When Covid-19 and floods forced firms in China to cut staff, they tried to find ways to return to Vietnam.

Xin Cai Border Station manages nearly 24 km of border spanning across Thuong Phung and Xin Cai wards. There are four patrol teams that work day and night. In the past six months, they have prevented 2,800 border crossing cases. In July, they detained up to 500 people who tried to cross the border illegally.

On August 4, the border guards at Tan Thanh Border Station also detected 27 people crossing the China-Vietnam border illegally. They are mainly from Cao Bang, Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Ha Giang and An Giang provinces.

All of them have been given health check-ups and sent to quarantine facilities.
