Northern Vietnam forecasted to see record cold winter
The northern region of Vietnam could face record cold spells in this year’s winter, said Mai Van Khiem, director of the National Hydro-meteorological Forecast Centre.
According to Khiem, in the last months of this year, this year’s winter in the north would come earlier than usual and the region would experience cold snaps with the temperatures much lower than usual.

The phenomenon is due to the impact of La Niña which will make the sea surface temperature across the equatorial Eastern Central Pacific Ocean to be lower than normal by 3 to 5 °C in the last months of the year.
Mountainous areas in the northern region of Vietnam would be hardest hit by the cold weather, Khiem said, noting that the forecast would be quite accurate as most of the centre’s forecasting models have the same result.
In September, Vietnam’s temperature is around 0.5-1 degree centigrade higher than the average level of many previous years. Meanwhile, the temperature between November and December is lower than that of previous years.
