Vietnamese students win gold at international maths olympiad

A 10th grader is among the students in Vietnam team who won two gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad 2020.

  

Vietnam team won two gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad 2020.

The General Department of Quality Management under the Ministry of Education and Training said on September 27 they had received the results from the 61st International Mathematical Olympiad 2020 held virtually from Russia. All six members of the Vietnam team won medals including two gold medals, one silver, two bronze and a consolation prize.

Two students that won gold medals are 10th grader Ngo Quy Dang and 11th grader Truong Tuan Nghia from the High School for Gifted Students, Vietnam National University in Hanoi.

Dang is the first 10th grader that was able to enrol in the national team. He was called "the king of prizes" for his various achievements at international maths contests during four years at Archimedes Academy. His first time participating in an international contest, the International Mathematics Competitions 2015, Dang won a silver medal. He has also won many prizes such as the first prize at the Asia Pacific Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools 2016 and the gold medal at the Singapore and Asian Schools Maths Olympiad 2017.

12th grader Nguyen Mac Nam Trung from the High School for Gifted Students, Vietnam National University in HCM City, won the silver medal.

12th grader Chu Thi Thanh from Vinh Phuc High School for the Gifted in Vinh Phuc and 12th grader Tran Nhat Minh from Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted in Nam Dinh won the bronze medals.

11th grader Vu Tung Lam from the High School for Gifted Students, Vietnam National University in Hanoi won the consolation prize.

A total of 616 students from 105 countries participated in this year International Mathematical Olympiad. 316 of them won medals including 49 gold medals, 112 silver medals and 155 bronze medals.

Vietnam team attend the contest from the University of Science, Vietnam National University in Hanoi and ranked 17th out of 105 teams.
