Hundreds of bicycles are given to disadvantaged children on November 10.

The National Fund For Vietnamese Children, the Department of Traffic Police and the Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs in Quang Nam worked with the sponsors to implement the programme.

Besides 350 bicycles, five insurance packages that worth VND20m (USD860) each were also given to the students.

This is the sixth year the programme was held to raise funds for poor children in Quang Nam. As of now, over 930 bicycles and 25 insurance packages have been transferred to the children in Quang Nam alone. The first programme was held in 2014 with fundraising cycling event.

The National Fund for Vietnamese Children said they had given over 13,000 bicycles to the children across Vietnam. There are over 200,000 children who dropped out of school because their houses are too far from their schools and they could only walk.

Statistics from the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs show that in the remote areas, the children often have to wake up since 4 am and walk 5-10km to go to school.

It is hoped that the bicycles will help ease their difficulties and improve their academic results.
