Hanoi is expected to have a second airport which has an annual capacity of around 50 million passengers.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has sent the Ministry of Transport a draft planning on national airport development by 2020 and a vision until 2050, including a project to build the second airport in Hanoi.

According to the CAAV, the second airport in Hanoi will have two runways and is expected to become operational after 2040. However, the CAAV has yet to determine the location of the airport in Hanoi and has asked the city to propose the location.

A representative from the CAAV also denied rumours that the airport would be situated in the Hoa Lac area.

He noted that the construction of the second airport in Hanoi is aimed to ease Noi Bai International airport’s overcapacity. By 2050, Noi Bai International Airport’s passenger number would exceed 100 million. By the time, despite being expanded, this figure would still mean Noi Bai would be stretched.

Earlier, the Hanoi Department of Planning and Architecture recommended building the airport in Ung Hoa District.

The CAAV reported that Vietnam has 22 airports, including nine capable of providing international flights. The figure would rise to 26 by 2030 and 30 by 2050.

Besides Hanoi's second airport, the draft planning also mentions the construction of an airport in the northern mountainous province of Cao Bang by 2050.
