Many cities and provinces have launched the 2021 Traffic Safety Year, promising to reduce the number of accidents, deaths and injuries in the new year.

On January 8, HCM City Traffic Safety Committee launched the 2021 National Traffic Safety Year while preventing Covid-19 outbreak for Tet Holiday.

Chairman of HCM City People's Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong said that the numbers of traffic accidents and fatalities dropped sharply in 2020. The city praised the efforts from state agencies, organisations and local people who helped reduce congestion and traffic accidents.

However, many people still failed to obey traffic rules. In order to reduce the number of accidents, deaths and injuries by 5-10%, the city authorities will apply stricter measures, more technology and AI in management. They will complete the second phase of the Urban Transport Operation Centre Project and tighten inspections over the usage the roads and pavements.

In 2020, HCM City recorded 2,944 traffic accidents, 564 deaths and 2,019 injuries. Compared to 2019, the numbers dropped by 13.9%, 12% and 15.2% respectively.

Hai Phong City Traffic Safety Committee also launched the 2021 National Traffic Safety Year on the same day and pledged to reduce the number of accidents, deaths and injuries by 5-10%. According to Vu Duy Tung, deputy director of the Department of Transport, the situation improved in 2020 with 79 accidents, 63 deaths and 38 injuries, a decrease of 17.7%, 19.2% and 9.5% compared to 2019.

"In 2021, we'll carry out more promotional programmes at workplaces, schools and residential areas. Our top priorities are truck drivers and transport company owners. Our immediate responsibility is safety for the Tet Holiday," he said.

A parade with the participation of 200 traffic police, 12 cars and 66 motorbikes was held in Hai Phong.

The 2021 Traffic Safety Year was first launched in Hanoi on January 5. Statistics from the Ministry of Public Security show that from 2016 to 2020, the number of traffic accidents in Vietnam dropped by 42.71% compared to the 2011-2015 period. The number of deaths and injuries dropped by 19% and 53.9% respectively.

In 2020, the number of traffic accidents dropped to the lowest in the past decade. For the first time, the number of deaths dropped to less than 7,000 a year.

Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh praised the efforts of local authorities and urged for stricter and more effective measures to deal with congestion in Hanoi and HCM City, ensure traffic safety while preventing Covid-19 outbreak and preparing for Tet Holiday.
