Southern region experiences coldest spell over past 41 years

The southern region of Vietnam is undergoing a coldest snap over the past 41 years, according to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

Nguyen Van Tan, a motorbike driver in HCM City, said that these days, the temperature is often around 20 degrees centigrade, particularly in the early morning and at night. Many people have to use raincoats to keep warm.

The National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting reported that the southern region of Vietnam faced the sharpest temperature fall Wednesday, the lowest since 1978. The temperature in Ta Lai area in Dong Nai Province was just 14.4 degrees centigrade, while it was 15.9 degrees centigrade in Long Khanh District, Dong Nai; 16.3 degrees centigrade in Tay Ninh Province, 16.5 degrees centigrade in Binh Phuoc and 19 degrees centigrade in HCM City.

Today, January 14, the south will become warmer and then continue having the cold weather in some days to come, said Le Dinh Quyet, deputy head of the Southern Regional Hydro-Meteorological Centre.
