Around 1.5 million migrant workers across Vietnam did not return home for the Lunar New Year due to fears about Covid-19 infections, according to Nguyen Dinh Khang, President of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour.

The majority of workers stayed in localities in the southern region such as HCM City and Binh Duong and Dong Nai provinces.

Khang added that many cities and provinces faced Covid-19 outbreaks when Tet was nearing, which was the main cause for the decision not to return home for Tet.

Earlier, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour also instructed trade unions in cities and provinces with Covid-19 infections to tighten control over disease prevention and support workers who have contracted the virus as well as those who are being quarantined.

The Vietnam General Confederation of Labour also called for all workers to carefully consider whether to return home for Tet or not.

HCM City Export Processing Zone and Industrial Park Authority (HEPZA) reported that before the recent Covid-19 outbreak in Hai Duong Province, around 65-70% out of the municipal export processing zones and industrial parks’ 276,000 workers had decided to stay in the city for Tet. However, since the pandemic outbreaks in many localities, the rate had risen to 75%.

HEPZA said that the agency organised activities to celebrate Tet. But mass gatherings would be suspended for Covid-19 prevention. Instead, workers will be given gifts at their accommodation.
