A taxi driver has just been detained after stealing money from a bank branch in Hanoi's Phuc Tho District.

A taxi driver is detained after stealing money from a bank branch in Hanoi's Phuc Tho District on March 15.

According to a report from local police, Pham Anh Hao, 43, broke into a branch of the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) in Phuc Tho District at noon on March 15. He carried a gun and a small black pack which he said was a mine.

Hao threatened some staff at the bank, told them to put money into some bags he brought or else he would trigger the mine.

A staff member of the bank gave Hao VND76 million (USD3,435) and then managed to push the alarm bell to call the police.


When the robber rushed out with the money, he was detained by the police and guards.

According to local police, Pham Anh Hao was a taxi driver for the Thang Loi Taxi Company. The gun and the mine he used in the bank robbery were all fake.

Hao told the police that he stole the money to repay a debt of VND40 million (USD1,739) to his company.
