South Korea further extends residence permit for Vietnamese workers

South Korea has announced it would extend the residence permit for foreign workers with expired Employment Permit System (EPS) by one year, including those from Vietnam.

The information was given by the Vietnamese Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs’ Centre for Overseas Labour.

According to the centre, the new permission will be imposed on all overseas workers under the EPS who will have completed their labour contract between April 13 and December 31 this year, including contracts with the time of three years and four years and 10 months.

After being stranded by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the migrant workers will be given the one-year extension of the resident permit and labour contract, instead of only 50 days as previously. Their employers have to be responsible for fulfilling procedures for the extension of labour contracts and work permits.

People who were granted the 50-day residence permit earlier but have the labour contract expiration from April 13 and December 31 this year will also enjoy the policy.

The Centre for Overseas Labour reported that in the first half of last year, around 34,600 Vietnamese people worked in South Korea under the EPS programme.
