The central city of Danang is seeking government approval to temporarily suspend flights that transport Vietnamese citizens from abroad to the city.

The proposal was signed by chairman of the municipal people’s committee Le Chung Trinh to be submitted to Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, the ministries of Transport, Health and Foreign Affairs.

According to the document, so far this year, Danang has received around 11,800 people from abroad. The city quarantined up to 8,000 people from these flights in April.

Since the beginning of the year, the city has recorded 72 Covid-19 patients who are migrants, including 61 cases since March 30.

The sharp rise in Covid-19 cases has put huge pressure on Danang Lung Diseases Hospital.

Therefore, the city wants to temporarily stop serving repatriation flights that transport Vietnamese citizens from overseas in order to help the city to focus on anti-Covid-19 efforts.

The city has also shut down non-essential services such as festivals, religious ceremonies, cinemas, pedestrian streets, bars and karaoke parlours from Monday midnight following a new Covid-19 locally-transmitted case that was confirmed on the same day.

The locality has closed beaches and gatherings of more than 30 people.

Local public transport services are permitted to use no more than 50 percent of their seat capacity to ensure safe distances between passengers.
