Authorities in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province have proposed to suspend flights to Con Dao Island to prevent virus spreading to the area.

there were now six direct flight routes connecting Con Dao to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Danang, Haiphong, Vinh, and Can Tho

According to a document sent by vice-chairman of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Provincial People's Committee, Tran Van Tuan to the Ministry of Transport and the Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority, the province has faced the threat of the virus spreading from boat crew members and foreign experts arriving to work in the area. The provinces are also receiving a large number of Vietnamese people returning from abroad to local quarantine sites.

"We have always paid attention to virus prevention and control in the province but there have been some challenges with Con Dao Island due to its poor healthcare system," the official said. "At present, the latest Covid-19 outbreak has affected many localities, especially in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. And there's a threat of virus transmission from flights coming to Con Dao from virus-hit areas.

Tuan said that there were now six direct flight routes connecting Con Dao to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Danang, Haiphong, Vinh, and Can Tho which are being operated by Bamboo Airways and Vasco.

"We propose to temporarily halt all these six flight routes to Con Dao to prevent the virus spreading to the island until the outbreak is brought under control in those localities," the document said.
