Vietnam confirms 4,941 new Covid-19 patients in Sunday morning report

Vietnam recorded an additional 4,941 Covid-19 infections in the past 12 hours, raising the total number of patients in the country to 205,656, the Ministry of Health reported at 6am on Sunday.

According to the ministry's report, 4,937 of the newly-confirmed patients are locally-transmitted cases most of whom were detected in quarantine sites or areas under lockdown in some localities including 1,896 in Ho Chi Minh City, 1,477 in Binh Duong, 724 in Long An, 390 in Dong Nai, 94 in Soc Trang, 63 in Hanoi, 62 in Danang, 57 in Vinh Long, 48 in Dong Thap, 23 in Ninh Thuan, 19 in Thua Thien-Hue, 18 in Kien Giang, 14 in Binh Dinh, 14 in Hau Giang, 13 in Phu Yen, nine in Quang Ngai, three in Lao Cai, three in Ha Tinh, two each in Thanh Hoa, Lang Son, Son La, Bac Lieu, and Ca Mau. Among these new infections, 1,274 cases were found in the communities.

Ho Chi Minh City continued to report the highest number of new infections in the country. On Saturday, the city also recorded 3,930 new patients, the majority of which are individuals who came into contact with confirmed Covid-19 patients or who were detected in either isolation and locked down areas. Social distancing rules are being further tightened in the city to contain the virus spread.

As of Sunday morning, 201,743 locally-transmitted cases have been reported since the new outbreak occurred in the country on April 27, including 119,802 in the virus hotspot of Ho Chi Minh City. The outbreak has so far spread to 62 cities and provinces nationwide.

The Ministry of Health has allowed localities with high number of infection cases to quarantine and treat patients at home.


With these new infection cases, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to 205,656 including 203,313 locally-transmitted cases.

On August 7, a total of 4,305 more patients were released from hospital following their full recovery, raising the number of recoveries in the country to 66,637.

On Sunday morning, a further 234 deaths related to Covid-19 were announced, bringing the total number of fatalities in Vietnam to 3,250.

The country has conducted over 8.89 million Covid-19 vaccine shots, with 888,459 people having received two doses.
