A woman in Lam Dong Province has been detained and prosecuted for deliberately spreading Covid-19 to other people.

Vu Thi Thao prosecuted for spreading virus

The police in Da Teh District, Lam Dong Province, prosecuted 46-year-old Vu Thi Thao on August 9 after she recovered from Covid-19 and was released from hospital. She was charged with deliberately spreading dangerous contagious diseases to other people.

Initial investigation showed that Thao was a fruit seller at Hoc Mon Wholesale Market in HCM City. When the market closed for Covid-19 prevention, Thao and her boyfriend travelled to Da Teh District by motorbike. When they went to the checkpoint on June 26, they told the guards that they had returned from Dong Nai Province to avoid a mandatory 21-day quarantine period. But they wrote in the medical declaration forms that they returned from Ea Khal Commune in Dak Lak Province.

After receiving a report that Thao didn't fill in her medical declaration truthfully, the police asked Thao and her boyfriend to go to the local medical station. Thao insisted that they had returned from Dong Nai.

Thao and her boyfriend were brought to quarantine centres and tested for Covid-19. Thao tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 on July 2.

Authorities in Lam Dong Province had to conduct viral tests for thousands of people and four people who had been in contact with Thao tested positive for Covid-19. As a result, local authorities had to apply social distancing in Phu Hoa Village for 15 days.

Thao was treated and discharged from the hospital on August 3.
