Thach Thanh Dich , 19, was happy that he could return home after a night waiting at the checkpoint.

"I decided to return to my hometown in Soc Trang Province as I have spent all of my savings during the long social distancing period in HCM City," he said. "It’s great that we are being supported with transportation now."

Since Thursday afternoon, thousands of people started to leave HCM City after hearing that the city would relax social distancing rules.

Serious congestion occurred when people were stopped at Covid-19 checkpoints. According to local authorities, the loosened social distancing rules would only allow residents to travel within the city.

While the guards at the checkpoints tried to persuade people to return to their residences, many decided to stay at the checkpoints throughout the night and wait until they could be allowed to leave.
