Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong said Long Thanh International Airport was critical to socio-economic development.

Trong told the closing ceremony of the Party Central Committee’s the 11th session on May 7 that the airport in Dong Nai Province, which was proposed at the Committee's fourth session in December 2011 would go ahead.

He said some clarification was needed about how the airport would become an international hub amid fierce competition from its South-east Asian counterparts.

But he asked for productive communications to generate political and public support for the project.

Trong noted that that the report on the investment and construction plan to be submitted to the National Assembly must clearly shows persuasive reasoning, such as the necessity to choose Long Thanh District as the construction place.

It needed to show the project’s significance to the national socio-economic development.

Transport Minister  Dinh La Thang was authorised by the government to report the project at the 35th session of the Standing National Assembly Committee on February 26, 2015. The capital of the project is estimated to be USD15.8 billion, down USD2.9 billion from initial projections.

Earlier,  Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung highlighted the need to build Long Thanh Airport, saying the southern economic zone is Vietnam’s economic centre, which sees the highest aviation transport demand in the country and must meet rising transport demand for both domestic and international routes.

Tan Son Nhat Airport in HCM City has a maximum capacity of 25 million passengers a year, and is located in the centre of the densely populated city, which limits potential for expansion.

Dung said it would be costly and unfeasible to upgrade the airport projected demand of 30-40 million passengers. Construction of Long Thanh International Airport will help to mitigate overcrowding Tan Son Nhat International Airport.
