Vietnam Electricity (EVN) has dismissed complaints about recent power price rises, insisting its pricing mechanism is transparent and in accordance with the law.

 EVN says pricing transparent

But Hanoi resident Nguyen Xuan Quang says his power bill is soaring, even though he only uses his two air conditioners at night when the heat becomes unbearable. His refrigerator is the only electrical appliance in constant use. But his power bill in June was VND3.8m, up VND1.4m on May.

"The electricity price has become the talk of the whole neighbourhood in the past few days and no one understand why it increases so much," Quang said.

"Our family sleeps in one room together to use less electricity for the air conditioner. TV-time is limited, since the children are busy all day, but the bill jumped sharply," he said.

EVN blamed higher electricity power bills on more frequent use of air conditioners during the current heat wave, and because of a new progressive pricing method.

The Ministry of Finance said on June 30 the electricity sector will have to take responsibility for technical problems. It, and the Ministry of Industry and Trade, will review the pricing mechanism if progressive pricing is proven unreasonable by experts.
