Vietnam suspends meat imports from Brazil

The Department of Animal Health was asked to closely inspect the imported meat products from Brazil that were transported to Vietnam by March 23. If products from 21 suspected companies are found, the department must report to the ministry. The department must also co-operate with Brazilian authorities.

Dozens of Brazilian officials were suspended and many big companies, including the giant exporter and producer like JBS and BRF companies, are under investigation for bribing and using banned substances to export rotten beef and poultry meat.

The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture said that this is an isolated issue and does not represent the whole Brazilian meat processing industry. Food safety management agencies in Europe, the US and China have officially demanded Brazil to explain what happened.

According to Vietnam General Department of Customs, as of March 15, Vietnam imported 2,780 tonnes of meat from Brazil that worth over USD4m. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Industry and Trade announced that the statistics from the Brazilian Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trades and Services show that in the first two months, Vietnam imported USD12.8m worth of meat products.

Vietnam imported 1,540 tonnes of chicken meat and other by-products of chickens, 770 tonnes of chicken wings and 470 tonnes of other meat and by-products.

Last year, the General Department of Customs reported 21,000 tonnes of meat from Brazil worth nearly USD25m was imported into Vietnam.

As of March 15, Vietnam imported a total of USD65m worth of meat. The US is Vietnam's biggest partner; the imported meat from the US account for 31.7% of the imported meat in Vietnam. Indian follows with 23.4%. Australia and Brazil are behind with 13.4% and 6.2% respectively.
