The CAV said procedures for Terminal 2 construction could begin as soon as possible.

Terminal 1 was designed to handle only two million passengers a year and when Terminal 2 is completed, Cat Bi Airport’s capacity will increase to 8 million.

In the first three months of 2017, Cat Bi Airport served up to 5,38,000 passengers and the throughput is expected to reach 2.1 million by the end of the year, causing overload on Terminal 1.

Earlier, low-cost carrier Vietjet made a proposal to the Ministry of Transport and the Hai Phong People’s Committee to allow the company to build the second terminal of Cat Bi at a cost of VND6 trillion (US$264 million).

Vietjet will provide 30% of the total cost while the remaining 70% will be arranged by Ho Chi Minh City Development Bank.

Cat Bi Airport is located in Hai An district, about eight kilometres to the southeast of central Hai Phong. The airport’s current terminal was inaugurated in May 2016.
