Minister of Information and Communications, Truong Minh Tuan, speaks at a meeting with the Viettel Group on July 7

Speaking at a meeting with the group on July 7, Tuan stressed the vital role of information technology (IT) and telecommunication in the country's development while the Industry 4.0 is affecting every field of the society.

IT and Telecommunications firms including Viettel which has made a milestone in the country's telecommunication development, are forecast to take the lead and help those in other sectors in the Industry 4.0 in Vietnam, the minister explained.

According to the minister, Viettel's 2016 revenue reached VND256.56 trillion, accounting for 61.5% of total revenues of the country's top five telecommunication companies including Viettel, VNPT, MobiFone, VTC, and VNPost. The firm contributed VND40.39trillion to the state budget last year, which was 81.65% of the total state budget contribution by the top five telecommunication firms.

In the first five months of this year, Vietnam's top five telecommunication firms made a total revenue of VND212.24 trillion and contributed VND25.17 trillion to the state budget, including VND115.52 trillion (or 54.4%) in revenues and VND20.19 trillion (or 80%) in state budget contribution by Viettel. This showed the major contribution made by Viettel to the economy, the minister noted.

“In 2004, telephone service coverage in Vietnam was just 4% and now the coverage has reached over 140%," he told the meeting. "Viettel has led in 4G licensing. Thanks to Viettel, we are proud to have built a telecommunication network that can keep up with the world."

The world telecommunication sectors have faced with tough competition in technologies and renovation besides challenges in terrain and economic development in the domestic market.

"Viettel has supported the ministry in dealing with various challenges over the last one and a half year, including help connecting remote, islands and border areas which many other firms refused to do" Tuan revealed.

"Viettel's coverage has widened over 100 kilometres off the coast, serving millions of people at sea," he said. "This does not only help in economic development but also ensure defence and security."

The minister also hailed the company in helping solve the chronic problems involving unregistered SIMs and spam messages.

"Viettel was the first company to have solutions for preventing spam messages," he said. "We've asked other service providers to use this solution to deal with the problems.

Besides the achievements made in Vietnam, Viettel has also been successful in investing overseas with 35 subscribers in 10 countries.

“After 30 years, Viettel has made a turning point for the development of the telecommunications and IT sector in Vietnam," the minister noted. "The group has not only contributed to the economy, defence but also helped introduce Vietnam to the world. We highly appreciates that Viettel always put the interests of the country and public above their profits."
