 >>  Aquaculture farmers need new loans after Damrey
About 5,000 employees in textile, aquaculture and bamboo and rattan sectors in the south-central coastal province of Khanh Hoa have lost jobs after their workplaces struck by Storm Damrey.

Le Dinh Nhat Tan, director of Sao Viet Company, said half of his 4,000-square-metre factory and the goods were ruined. "Not to mention the untested equipment. We have halted operations," he said.

Nguyen Thi Khue, director of Thanh Khue Company in Nha Trang City said most bamboo and rattan products were damaged. "Three factories were heavily damaged. The products can't be exported anymore. We haven't calculated the damage yet," she said.

Statistics from Khanh Hoa Province Department of Industry and Trade show that factories of 17 out of 19 firms in Dien Phu and Dac Loc industrial clusters in Nha Trang City had suffered damage. Many firms in Ninh Hoa and Van Ninh districts also had to halt operations from one to six months for repair.

Dinh Phuong Thao, a worker at Nha Trang Textile Company, is seven-month pregnant and her work accounted for most of her family’s income. However, her company is severely damaged after the storm, and operation has been halted.

She said, "I was shocked when I heard that we would be given days off indefinitely. What should I do to safely give birth and raise my child?"

Representatives of Khanh Hoa Federation of Labour visited and surveyed the damage at eight firms that were hardest hit in the province and gave them VND240m (USD10,500) donated by Labour Newspaper and other organisations. It is estimated that about 5,000 employees have lost their jobs, of which 1,500 have houses damaged in the storm.

Vice chairwoman of Khanh Hoa Federation of Labour said, "The immediate solution is to have firms pay basic wages to the workers during this downtime. We're also supporting people whose houses were damaged and will call for funds to help people."
