During a conference on economic corridors in Hanoi, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Lao Cai in Vietnam and Yunnan in China in last November, leaders in Lao Cai and Yunnan provinces agreed to build the bridge that crosses the Red River, believing it would help boost trade ties and the regional economy.

Hoang Quoc Khanh, director of Lao Cai Province's Department of Planning and Investment, said the Department of Transport was asked to research the project's feasibility. The provincial authorities are completing documents for approval from the government and related ministries.

Both China and Vietnam are building infrastructure for cross-border co-operative areas and Bat Xat District is the most suitable for the link to China. Border trade is still very active in Lao Cai Province with traders transferring fruits from Ban Phiet Commune to China via ferry and boats. A new bridge will make trading activities more convenient.

Director of Lao Cai Department of Transport, Nong Van Hung said, "Both China and Vietnam want to build the bridge as soon as possible. What we need now is funding and a proper planning which will be submitted to the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defence."

In last May, Cao Bang Province also proposed to use a USD300-million loan from China for an expressway connecting Lang Son and Cao Bang provinces. This is part of the project that connects Guangxi and Cao Bang provinces and maritime routes to other ASEAN countries.

In September 2017, Quang Ninh Province authorities and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region built the 618-metre Bac Luan II Bridge.
