Quang Nam to revive silk farming culture
The central province of Quang Nam is preparing thousands of hectares to develop silk-worm cultivation and silk production.
However, due to lack of funding to upgrade technology and a lack of outlets for the products, most villagers abandoned the craft. There are only a few dozen hectares of land left for silk farming and most households now specialize in selling silkworm pupae for cooking.
The provincial authorities have issued supportive policies in order to encourage firms to invest in silk farming craft villages and turn them into tourist sites. Thanh said the land was still in good condition for farming and the infrastructure had improved greatly over the years. Moreover, the land near Thu Bon River is public land so they can lease it out to firms.
Le Thai Vu, chairman of Quang Nam Silk Company, agreed that they had to find outlets first before starting production. They have started a pilot programme with several Quang Nam farmers and will buy all the products.
Quang Nam Province will use 3,000 hectares to revive silk farming. A pilot programme will be carried out on 10 to 20-hectare lands within this year.
