The plan is expected to cost some VND18 trillion (USD775.4 million).

The airport will be expanded to 791 hectares. Meanwhile, Terminal 3 with an annual capacity of 20 million passengers, will be built at the southern end of the airport, where the current domestic and international terminals of the airport are located.

Under the plan, the number of parking areas will be raised to 106 from the current 56.

Hoang Hoa Tham and Than Nhan Trung streets leading to the airport will be also expanded to four lanes to ease traffic congestion. Construction of an overpass and an elevated road in the area is being considered to also ease traffic.

The area in the airport’s north will be prioritized to build reservoirs and a pumping station to deal with flooding. Meanwhile, support facilities are planned to be built in the south.

Minister of Transport Le Dinh Tho recently said that runway 07L/25R at Tan Son Nhat Airport and Runway 1B at Noi Bai Airport have many cracks and shows signs of subsidence due to being overused.
