10M agro-forestry-fishery exports up 8.1% y-o-y

The agriculture, forestry, and fishery sector recorded $32.6 billion in export turnover during the January to October period, up 8.1 per cent year-on-year, the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) quoted the Agro Processing Market Development Authority (AgroTrade) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as reporting on November 2.

The export of key farm produce hit $16.4 billion; 2.3 per cent higher than in the same period last year. Earnings from aquatic, husbandry, and forestry products were estimated at $7.24 billion, $460 million, and $7.6 billion; rising 6.2 per cent, 9.5 per cent, and 16.3 per cent, respectively.

Over the ten-month period, Vietnam earned $2.6 billion from shipping 5.2 million tonnes of rice abroad, an increase of 1.7 per cent in volume and 14.1 per cent in value year-on-year.

Strong growth in rice export revenue was seen in Indonesia, Iraq, the Philippines, and Malaysia.

Exports of cassava, meanwhile, reached 1.92 million tonnes worth $739.6 million, down 9.78 per cent in quantity but up 16.1 per cent in value compared to the same period in 2017.

Coffee export revenue recovered after a period of decline. Some 1.57 million tonnes were sold in foreign countries for $2.98 billion, a year-on-year increase of 21.3 per cent in volume and 0.9 per cent in value.

Regarding fruit and vegetables, Vietnam exported around $3.3 billion worth of products, up 15.5 per cent year-on-year.

Conversely, a decline in export revenue was seen in pepper (33.4 per cent), rubber (7.3 per cent), and tea (7.7 per cent).

AgroTrade, as quoted by VNA, said that from the beginning of the year Vietnam also spent $25.72 billion on agriculture, forestry and fishery imports, or 11.1 per cent higher than in the same period in 2017.
