Vietjet Air's Director Luu Duc Khanh said opening flights to and from Van Don Airport was a part of their business expansion plan and would help Quang Ninh’s tourist attraction.

Van Don International Airport is the first Build-Operate-Transfer in Vietnam. It is estimated to welcome around 500,000 passengers in the first year of operation. The airport costs over VND7.5trn and is designed to receive two million passengers and 10,000 tonnes of goods a year.

Quang Ninh authorities and Sun Group is expected to hold an opening ceremony at the end of December.

Nguyen Duc Long, chairman of Quang Ninh People's Committee, said, "The airport has been completed after three years. We have reported to the prime minister and asked for support to quickly deal with legal procedures and open the airport."

Quang Ninh could receive over 12 million passengers this year and becomes a major market for Vietjet Air. The airlines will also offer various discount programmes for the new route and wants preferential treatment from the government.
