The Long Thanh International Airport project in the southern province of Dong Nai has been scheduled to begin construction in 2020 and operate in 2025, according to Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV).

AVC has informed the Ministry of Transport about the implementation of the project’s feasibility report which is set to be completed in June next year before submission to the National Assembly four months later.

The prime minister has issued a decision approving the feasibility report on site clearance, compensation and resettlement work for the sub-project. The Dong Nai government has mobilised human resources from the departments and agencies to carry out the sub-project.

ACV has also co-operated with the consultant JFV to conduct the project’ s items. However, to make sure that the project will begin in June 2020 and be put into operation in 2025, ACV needs efforts from concerned ministries, agencies and localities, particularly from the Ministry of Transport.

The resettlement and site clearance compensation from 2017 to 2021 will cost nearly VND22.9 trillion (USD978.7 million), affecting 4,800 local households and 26 organisations.

Once fully operational, the airport could serve 100 million passengers and five million tonnes of cargo per year.

Under the proposal by the project consultant JFV, up to 85% of national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines’ international flights currently served at Tan Son Nhat International Airport could be moved to Long Thanh International Airport.
