The Hanoi Metro Line 3 project is struggling to be completed by the year-end.

The metro line running from Nhon Town in Nam Tu Liem District to Hanoi Station in Dong Da District was started in September 2010. Until now, just 8.5 out of the 12.5-kilometre metro route have been finished, while work is still underway for the remaining 4.5 kilometres.

The cost has doubled to VND36 trillion (USD1.56 billion).

The slow place has been attributed to difficulties in removing trees and putting part of the project underground. Many households did not agree on compensation affecting project implementation.

According to the Hanoi People’s Committee, the tendering process also took time.

The annual allocation of Official Development Assistance capital was also insufficient, which was among the main factors hindering the project’s pace.

Metro projects are slow to implement in Vietnam as they are unfamiliar types of projects.

To ensure the project to be finished in 2020, Hanoi authorities have instructed the investor to speed up their work.
