Speaking with the Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper on August 14, head of the customs division at Lao Cai border gate, Le Phuong, said that the container trucks transported dragon fruit from the southern central province of Binh Thuan and other southern provinces to Lao Cai Province for shipment to China.

Container trucks had to line up around Kim Thanh international border gate No.2 for customs clearance.

"At present, China only conducts customs clearance procedures for some 200 vehicles carrying dragon fruit into the country each day," Thanh said.

As it is now dragon fruit harvest season and some 300 trucks transport the fruit through the border gate each day, which results in more serious jam, he said.

It is estimated that the export volume of dragon fruit to China through the Kim Thanh border gate has amounted to 480,000 tons, generating USD313 million in export turnover.

Deputy director of the Binh Thuan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Phan Van Tan, said that they are harvesting some 70,000 tonnes of dragons fruits by the end of August.

"We have instruct local farmers to adjust the harvest time to avoid being on stock and have better prices," the official said."

Tan added that the province now has a total area of 28,000 ha for dragon fruits with total output of 500,000-600,000 tonnes a year.
