The Ministry of Transport has proposed Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc for capital allocation to repair and upgrade Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi and Tan Son Nhat International Airport in HCM City.

According to the Ministry of Transport, these two airports are struggling with the severe overloading due to the increasing travel demand. The airports’ runway system has deteriorated with cracks and subsidence.

The runway repair carried out the Airports Corporation of Vietnam is just a temporary solution. The runways are posing a risk to flights. If they are not fixed soon, it could lead to the suspension of their operation.

The ministry has asked the prime minister to consider the use of 10% of the capital for the national medium-term projects during 2016-2020 and provide more capital for the ministry to upgrade the runways.

Runway 1A at Noi Bai International Airport has seen subsidence which is up to one metre wide along with many cracks. Meanwhile, runway 1B’s surface is cracked and broken and can get muddy at times, especially during the rainy season.

Meanwhile, the airport’s Runway 1B, which opened to traffic in 2003, was made to handle 10,500 takeoffs and landings in 20 years but to date, this number has already reached 284,200. Some sections of it have broken again after being mended.
