Companies caught using banned chemicals in fish sauce
Three companies have been publicly shamed after being discovered to use banned chemicals in producing fish sauce.
The companies were accused of processing food without covering to prevent insects and animals and using wrong and banned additives in making fish sauce. They had used chemicals in soap and sanitary cleaner productions to make fish sauce.
The case was discovered by the inspectorate of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ministry of Public Security and inspectorates at local departments of agriculture and rural development in Vinh Long, An Giang and HCM City since mid-2019. An inter-ministerial body was also set up to deal with the case.
The documents then were transferred to the Ministry of Public Security. The inspectorate continued working with the police to take samples. The testing results showed that the companies used banned chemicals and there were heavy metals in the fish sauce.
"We've relentless pursued this case and this is the first time an investigative team of over 30 members has been formed in order to inspect nine locations at the same time. It's also the first time we've fined a company VND782m (USD33,800)," Tien said.
The companies must not use the remaining materials to make fish sauce. The companies already made commitments to pay taxes and will use the materials to make animal feed instead under the monitoring of the inspectorate of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and local departments of agriculture.
