The Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has agreed on pig imports to mitigate local supply shortages.

Under the decision signed by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien, the Department of Animal Health will co-operate with Vietnamese importers to hold an online meeting with agencies from exporting countries.

After being imported into Vietnam, all pigs will be quarantined for 30 days to ensure safety and have to meet requirements on animal health and sanitation and quarantine certificates for export.

The Vietnam News Agency cited Tien as saying that first shipments could probably come from Thailand. The ministry will also create the best possible conditions for the import of breeding pigs to help increase the number of local herds.

Pork prices in Vietnam have kept on increasing, reaching record highs because of limited supply in the domestic market.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, since the beginning of the year, African Swine Fever has resurfaced in 155 communes of 20 cities and provinces, causing nearly 4,000 pigs to be culled.

This has seriously slowed an increase in livestock which was expected to help ease the domestic market’s pork shortages by the end of this year.

The country witnessed an on-year rise of 300% in pork imports between January and mid-May, however, sales have remained low as many people prefer fresh pork.
