Vietnam still saw an on-year growth of 11% in shrimp export value last year despite the Covid-19 pandemic. The figure is expected to be higher this year.

The information was given by Nguyen Viet Thang, head of the Vietnamese Fisheries Association, at the ongoing Vietshrimp Aquaculture International Fair 2021 in the Mekong Delta City of Can Tho.

According to Thang, last year, despite being hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, Vietnam earned USD3.7 billion from shrimp exports, up 11% on-year. This year, the country’s shrimp export value would reach over USD4 billion.

Tran Dinh Luan, head of the General Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that under the government’s plan on the Mekong Delta’s sustainable development, seafood has remained the key sector in the region, including shrimp breeding. Over the past year, the region has seen many effective shrimp raising models. So Vietnam could hope to see shrimp export value of USD5-6 billion in the coming time.

The country is currently home to around 200,000 hectares of shrimp breeding using new technologies, and concentrated in the two southern provinces of Bac Lieu and Soc Trang covering 168,000 hectares.

Vietnam needs to build a strategy to become the leading shrimp production and processing country, with the target of accounting for roughly 25% of the global market share worth USD20 billion in export value by 2045.

Vietshrimp Aquaculture International Fair 2021 attracts nearly 200 booths of 150 businesses and organisations inside and outside the country. The event will last until the end April 16.
