Quang Binh seafood firms struggle to export to China
Many seafood exporters in Quang Binh Province are facing difficulties with exports to China as their goods aren't cleared at border gates.
Vu Lam Company's Director Dang Thi Lien said they tried to export the seafood via Mong Cai Border Gate in Quang Ninh Province but the Chinese authorities didn't clear the goods. Many trucks had to turn back while others waited for weeks at the border gates until the seafood went bad.
"After 15-20 days, our fish was spoiled so we had to sell it to other firms to make pig feed. We spent VND4.3bn (USD186,500) on the fish last month. We also agreed to help export VND4bn worth of seafood for other firms," Lien said. "We bought the fish for VND120,000 per kilo. When it went bad, we sell it for only VND10,000 to VND12,000 per kilo."
Duc Hieu Company is also in the same situation. Since March, 20-25 tonnes of fish have gone bad at the border gate. They have suffered over VND2bn in losses.
Mai Thi Vinh, Duc Hieu Company's Director, said, "We had to borrow money from the banks to pay for the fishermen in the last two months. At this rate, we may go bankrupt."
Dong Vinh Quang, chairman of Canh Duong Commune People's Committee, said they had nine seafood export firms but there is only one cold storage with a capacity of 50 tonnes. 80% of the residents are fishermen or in the seafood industry. They have 648 fishing boats with 4,000 members.
"Firms have stopped buying fish now because of export difficulties. As a result, fish prices dropped dramatically and badly impacted the fishing households. We'll ask higher authorities for solutions or financial support for firms to build additional cold storage," Quang said.
