On August 2, according to the HCM City Department of Customs, three weeks after social distancing, the number of goods at Cat Lai Port increased while the number of freight vehicles has decreased. A 106,717 TEU, or 20-foot equivalent unit, of goods are stuck at the port, occupying over 86% of the port area.

For the next two months, the number of goods will continue to increase to 115,000 TEU, taking over 91% of the port area.

The goods were unable to complete the import and export process as firms in Dong Nai, Binh Duong and HCM City couldn't organise to let workers stay at workplaces and have halted production.

HCM City Department of Customs asked the General Department of Vietnam Customs to let Saigon Newport Corporation, manager of Cat Lai Port, send the cargo that has been kept at Cat Lai Port for over 90 days to Tan Cang-Hiep Phuoc Port for storage.

The department has also sought permission to let Saigon Newport Corporation rent warehouses at multiple other ports like Lotus Port and Tan Thuan Port. The company should also be allowed to delay and keep the cargo at Cai Mep Port for a while before they are brought to Cat Lai.

All employees at Cat Lai will alternatively work all day to clear the cargo and deal with overloading problems.

Moreover, firms can submit documents online during the social distancing period and the physical documents can be submitted later.
