Residents in the poverty-hit district of Quang Binh in the northern mountainous province of Ha Giang have successfully developed caged fish farming at Song Chung Reservoir in order to help improve their incomes.

Quang Binh is a lowland district in the southwest of Ha Giang Province where the Song Chung Hydropower Plant is located.

The reservoir covers an area of 225 hectares, stretching 15 km in the territory of Tan Bac and Tan Nam Communes in Quang Binh. Thanks to its stable water level, authorities in Quang Binh District have supported local residents to develop a caged fish farming model in the area.

Up to now, there are more than 100 fish cages of one co-operative and seven households, mainly raising sardines, monogamous tilapia and black carp.

Each fish cage produces 300 tonnes per year, bringing in VND15 billion a year.

Dinh Van Son, director of the Aquaculture Co-operative in Song Chung Hydropower Reservoir, said that since 2018, his co-operative has invested in 81 fish cages.

“Currently, we raise green catfish, crispy carp, all of which are popular with consumers, so the prices are very high,” he said.

Since applying the fish cage farming model, his family’s income has improved.

Trieu Thi Mai, a member of the co-operative, said that in the past, her family only earned about VND30 million a year from farming and raising chickens. Since joining the co-operative, she has earned about VND 5-7 million a month.

“I learned techniques to raise and take care of specialty fish with high economic value, so my income has increased significantly,” said Mai.

Caged fish farming at Song Chung Hydropower Reservoir has brought economic efficiency, helping to increase local incomes.

However, the scale of cages is not as large as in other regions, and farmers lack experience.

In the coming time, the district plans to support farmers with loans as well as technical processes so that the model could be expanded.
