Vietnam Administration of Tourism under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism unveiled the project entitled “Promoting Self-sustainable Community Development in Vietnam through Heritage Tourism” at a workshop in Hanoi on May 6.

Mr. Matsunaga Masaei, JICA’s Senior representative in Vietnam, said, “Strong and high economic growth has created a situation where traditional craft villages may go extinct if a different model is not applied.”

The project would contribute to establishing a community-based tourism management system which would be able to quickly react and make policies, and could help solve other difficulties, such as the negative environmental impacts of tourism, said Matsunaga.

The programme will be set up, in the period between 2011 and 2014, first in three villages: Duong Lam in Hanoi, Phuoc Tich, in Thua Thien Hue Province, and Dong Hoa Hiep, in Tien Giang Province.

At the workshop, officials from these places,, along with some from Hoi An and Phu Hoi traditional village in Dong Nai, presented their tourism development plans to best utilise cultural and community resources.

Vietnamese experts and Japanese professors in the fields of tourism and cultural heritage management shared their experience and knowledge through case studies done in Vietnam and Japan. They hope this will help create a new approach to tourism development in Vietnam.

As part of the programme, a conference to be called the Significance of Duong Lam Ancient Village Cultural Value will be held on May 7 in Duong Lam village, Son Tay, Hanoi. Through the gathering, Japanese and Vietnamese researchers will evaluate the value of Duong Lam village.
