“This year Christmas falls on the weekend, which makes it easier for people to experience the wintery weather of Sapa,” said Le Manh Hao, head of Sapa District Culture and Tourism Office.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting, a severe cold spell will hit Sapa and the surrounding mountain areas from December 24 to 27, with temperatures dipping below one degree Celsius. The cold weather makes the destination more attractive for the Christmas season.

Local residents said that if the temperature falls below zero degrees Celsius, it will be the second year in a row they have experienced such weather. Although it is uncommon, it gives tourists a chance to see a bit of the traditional Christmas atmosphere.

Hotels and restaurants in Sapa have been busy decking their walls with decorations in the past week in hope of attracting clients.

Hao added that a lot of people, both local and foreign, are coming to Sapa to celebrate the holidays.
