The northwestern province of Lao Cai has temporarily stopped licensing tours and selling tickets to Hoang Lien National Park and Fansipan Mountain until the first quarter of 2014 to serve forest fire prevention.

According to Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development To Manh Tien, following the mid-December snowfall, forests in mountainous districts of Sa Pa, Bat Xat and Muong Khuong have wilted, creating a thick layer of dead leaves and grass.

Cold weather and a lack of rain have added to the low humidity, making risks of forest fires, particularly in the Hoang Lien National Park, visible, he added.

Therefore, authorised agencies have paused tours to Fansipan Mountain and the park to serve forest fire prevention work.

The park’s managers have publicised the information so that travel agencies can timely arrange alternative tours.

The 3,143m mountain is located at the heart of Hoang Lien National Park. It is the highest in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia and dubbed the “Roof of Indochina”.
