The book is part of a project on Vietnam’s intangible cultural heritage by the International Research Center for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region (ICHCAP), under the auspices of UNESCO. This is the first time ICHCAP has sponsored a book on the intangible cultural heritage of a city.

Mr. Kwon Huh, ICHCAP Director General, told the launch ceremony that the book would enhance the public’s awareness on intangible cultural heritage and depict the cultural diversity found in Vietnam. It can also be used as educational material and promote the intangible cultural heritage of Vietnam. More importantly, it will be used as a basis for heritage preservation plans.

Appreciating the support from ICHCAP, Ms. Le Thi Minh Ly, Director of the Center for Research and Promotion of Cultural Value, said the book aims to bring heritages closer to local and global communities, while connecting the protection of local intangible cultural heritages with regional and international preservation efforts. This is also one of the strategies to protect and promote the intangible cultural heritage values of Hanoi, she added.

The book features 24 heritages requiring priority preservation and more than 100 illustrations and 22 writings focusing on folklore linguistics, theatrical performances, customs and beliefs, traditional festivals, and traditional handicraft trade villages. It also features talks with artisans and artists. All the heritage is still “alive”; performed regularly in the community.

The book is available in both English and Vietnamese, in libraries, research institutes, and schools. A free version can be downloaded from ICHCAP at http://www2.ichcap.org/publications.
