Hanoi will operate four more bus routes using compressed natural gas (CNG) buses from July this year to help reduce traffic jams and protect the environment.

Thái Hồ Phương, deputy director of the Hanoi Urban Transport Management and Operation Centre under the municipal Department of Transport, said on Tuesday.

The four routes are Kim Lũ in Sóc Sơn District-Nam Thăng Long in Bắc Từ Liêm District, Cầu Giấy-Tam Hiệp in Thanh Trì District, Nhổn in Bắc Từ Liêm District-Thọ An in Đan Phượng District and Yên Nghĩa Terminal in Hà Đông District-Hoài Đức.

Phương said the four routes were part of a project to improve service quality and develop the public transport system in Hanoi.

Buses using CNG have more smoother engines and release 53-63 per cent less harmful gases than traditional buses. They also emit 20 per cent less carbon dioxide than other buses.

Earlier in August last year, the Bảo Yến Construction Services Tourism Co Ltd opened the capital's first three bus routes using CNG vehicles.
