Organized in a cooperative effort between the city’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Cai Rang District People’s Committee, the event aims to promote tourism in the Mekong Delta in general and in Can Tho in particular as well as introduce international tourists to the culture and people of Cai Rang Floating Market. It is also an opportunity for local businesses to work together with travel companies to attract more tourists.

Over the course of the three days are many activities depicting the culture and life of the “waterland” of the Mekong Delta.

The highlight will be a boat procession during the opening ceremony starting from Ninh Kieu Wharf and running along the Cai Rang River to the Cai Rang Floating Market.

There will also be tourism conferences, with local travel agents introducing and promoting their products and services.

A photo and book exhibition with the theme “Achievements of 15 Years of Building a Modern Can Tho City from 2004 to 2019” will help visitors learn more about the history and development of the area.

They will also have the opportunity to enjoy specialties from the region and the city at food stalls, while agricultural and craft products will also be introduced and sold.

The event will be animated by sports and arts activities such as boat racing, martial arts contests, traditional sports, and performances of “don ca tai tu” - the typical folk music and singing of southern people.

Organized annually for three years, the event attracts a lot of attention and participation from tour operators and tourists. Last year it welcomed about 50,000 visitors, according to the department.

Located about 6 km from the center of Can Tho city, the Cai Rang Floating Market was created by local people hundreds of years ago. It is a leading tourism destination in Can Tho city, revealing the waterway market culture in the area, where there is an interlaced network of rivers and canals. Boats were previously the primary means of transport.

City authorities have made efforts to preserve and develop the local heritage, focusing on raising public awareness about the importance of the market for tourism development and enhancing tourism links in the region to attract more holidaymakers.

At the heart of the Mekong Delta, Can Tho is one of seven tourism hubs in Vietnam under the national master plan for tourism development to 2020 and vision to 2030. It welcomed 4.9 million visitors in the first half of this year, up 9.5 per cent against the same period last year.
