Google marks Hoi An’s Full Moon Lantern Festival

Google Doodle today, July 16, features the central province of Quang Nam’s Hoi An City with stunning colourful lanterns in full moonlight.

This is the first time Hoi An City, which has been recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, has appeared on Google Doodle.

The doodle depicts the image of the Japanese Covered Bridge, one of the locality’s most iconic destinations, along with lanterns in the full moonlight.

The city is among the most popular tourist attractions in Vietnam. TheFull Moon Lantern Festival which is held on the 15th of every lunar month is one of Hoi An’s traditions.

During the festival, local people burn incense and ignite small lanterns in the full moonlight and float them on Hoai River. Through the celebration, they want to wish happiness and lucks for their families and relatives.

Old Town Hoi An, the city's historic district, is recognized as an exceptionally well-preserved example of a Southeast Asian trading port dating from the 15th to the 19th century, its buildings and street plan reflecting a blend of indigenous and foreign influences. Prominent in the city's old town is the covered Japanese Bridge dating to the 16th-17th century.

At present, the city has around 1,360 historical sites, including 1,068 old houses, 11 old wells.
