The groundbreaking ceremony was held on October 12.

According to the management board of the investment projects of civil and industrial works in HCM City, the money will come from the city budget and the new museum will be completed in three years. There will be one underground floor and four storeys on a 6,021-square-metre land plot.

Pham Thanh Nam, director of Ton Duc Thang Museum, said the new museum will have all required rooms such as the display section, warehouse, and technical and video processing rooms.

Nam said they had worked to improve the business and attract more young people.

The museum is named after the late President Ton Duc Thang. It was opened in 1988, displaying many documents, images and artefacts about Vietnam's history and people during the French and American wars. The life and revolutionary career of the president are also featured.

The museum is storing about 16,000 document and items. However, due to the lack of space, many items can't be displayed or preserved well.

It has welcomed over 1.5 million visitors since the opening.
