Under the project, the auto fire alarm system will be installed at 1,107 historical and cultural relics in the ancient town. The project will also include the construction of water supply system and underground water tanks as well as a smart electricity system for fire fighting.

Hoi An City is now home to 1.438 historical sites, including 1,130 in the old town. The majority of the sites are privately-owned old houses which are made of wood. Many roads in Hoi An Town are narrow and lack fire fighting systems.

Increased tourism service was among the causes of higher fire risks for Hoi An.

Nguyen Van Lanh, vice chairman of Hoi An City People’s Committee, said the project was an urgent need to help preserve Hoi An town.

Lanh added that Hoi An had dealt with works facing the risk of collapse but the city was still facing challenges of fire, natural disasters and human impact.
